LVT and LVP use the same vinyl technology. The difference is shape, and shape changes the look and the installation.
Planks mimic wood and run in long rows. Tiles mimic stone, slate and ceramic in squares and rectangles, often 12 by 24 or 18 by 18 inches.

Real stone and porcelain feel cold on a February morning in Kitchener, especially over a basement slab. LVT stays close to room temperature.
It is also softer to stand on and far quieter. Dropped dishes are more likely to survive, and footsteps do not echo through the house.
Modern printing and embossing make marble, travertine and concrete looks very convincing. From standing height, most visitors cannot tell the difference.
Groutable LVT is installed with spacers, usually 1/8 inch, and then filled with a flexible grout made for vinyl. That is very different labour from click plank.
Tiles have to be set in perfectly straight lines, because the grout joint shows every drift. We snap layout lines in both directions and work from the centre of the room.
We use urethane or acrylic premixed grouts, never cement grout, which would crack as the vinyl moves. The result looks like ceramic but keeps vinyl's comfort.
LVT comes in two main constructions. Each suits a different job.
Dry-back tiles are thin, flexible and fully adhered with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. We roll them with a 100 pound roller to set the bond.
This is the standard for offices, clinics and retail. It handles rolling carts and chairs, and it can be replaced tile by tile for decades.
Click LVT has a rigid core and locking edges, like SPC plank. It floats over most flat subfloors without adhesive.
It is ideal for kitchens, entries and basements in homes. It installs faster and can go over some existing floors.
In Waterloo Region, LVT is a commercial-first product. Offices near the tech corridor, medical and dental clinics, and retail units all use it.
We install with commercial wear layers of 20 to 40 mil and add welded or heat-formed cove base where hygiene matters. Work can be scheduled overnight or on weekends.

Thin glue-down LVT telegraphs every flaw. Trowel marks, cracks and old adhesive ridges all show through under raking light.
We skim coat concrete with a feather-finish patch and sand it smooth. Wood subfloors get a plywood underlayment with filled, sanded seams.
Adhesive is chosen by the slab's moisture reading. High-moisture slabs need a moisture-tolerant adhesive or a separate barrier coat, which our floor sealing and waterproofing crew can apply.
This is LVT's hidden advantage over plank and over real tile. One gouged or stained tile can be swapped in under an hour.
We warm the damaged tile with a heat gun, lift it, clean the old adhesive and bond a new tile from your spares. Grouted tiles get fresh grout around the replacement.
Always keep a few extra tiles after installation. Businesses in particular save money over the life of the floor.

Ask for a Free QuoteYes, if the product is designed for it. Groutable LVT is installed with spacers and filled with a flexible urethane or acrylic grout. It looks like ceramic from standing height but stays warmer and will not crack over small subfloor movement.
For most basements, yes. LVT is warmer, quieter and more forgiving over a slab that is not perfectly flat. Porcelain lasts longer and handles standing water better, so it suits basement bathrooms and walkouts with a membrane beneath.
With glue-down LVT, easily. We warm the tile, lift it out, clean the adhesive and set a new one. With click LVT in the middle of a room, the repair takes more cutting but is still possible.
Yes, with a commercial wear layer of 20 mil or more, glue-down installation and a walk-off mat system at the door. Road salt and grit are the biggest wear factors in Kitchener entrances, so mats and cleaning matter as much as the tile.
