In 16+ years and more than 1,700 flooring jobs, we have learned where heated floors pay off and where they disappoint. We test every heating cable before, during and after the floor goes down, so it works when you turn it on.
Our installers are licensed, insured and WSIB covered, and we coordinate with licensed electricians for the final connection. Every heated floor comes with a written 1-year labour warranty.
Forced air heats the air near the ceiling first, and tile floors stay cold. Radiant heat warms the floor, which then warms you and the objects in the room.
In Waterloo Region, where winter runs from November to April, that comfort matters most in bathrooms, basements and entries. It also lets many people set the main thermostat a degree or two lower.
A heated floor also dries faster after showers and snowy boots, which helps with the damp that builds up in basements and mudrooms.
There are two ways to heat a floor. The right one depends on the size of the space and how you heat your home.

Most bathroom and kitchen projects we do use electric systems such as Schluter DITRA-HEAT cable or Nuheat mats. Custom homes in areas like Puslinch often run hydronic tubing through the whole main floor.
Heated floors earn their cost in rooms where you stand barefoot or where the slab is cold.
The most popular heated floor by far. A warm tile floor turns a bathroom from functional into comfortable.
Heat also dries the floor and grout faster, which helps prevent mildew. We keep cable out from under vanities and toilets.
Basement slabs in older Kitchener homes often sit at 15 to 17 degrees Celsius in winter. Radiant heat under vinyl, tile or engineered wood makes the space usable all year.
Insulating under the heat is key. We add an insulated underlayment so heat goes up, not into the concrete.
Kitchens with tile floors are cold where people stand at the counter. Heat along the working zones fixes that.
Entryways dry wet boots and melt tracked-in snow faster. It is a small area with a big comfort payoff.
This is where people make expensive mistakes. Each floor covering has its own temperature limit.

The vinyl limit is the one most people get wrong. Without a floor sensor and a thermostat set to a hard maximum, vinyl can warp or discolour.

For tile, we prefer heating cable set into an uncoupling membrane. The membrane holds the cable at exact spacing and protects the tile from substrate movement.
Mat systems are set in a thin bed of self-levelling compound or thinset. Cables never cross, stay about 3 inches from walls and never run under cabinets or fixtures. Our floor levelling and patching crew handles the levelling layer.
We test the cable's resistance with a meter before installation, after it is embedded and again after tile is set. We photograph the layout for your records.
Every system gets a floor sensor, a thin probe set between cable runs. The thermostat reads the floor temperature directly, not just the air.
Programmable and Wi-Fi thermostats let you warm the floor before you wake up and switch off when you leave. That saves energy and makes the floor ready when you want it.
For vinyl and wood, we set a maximum floor temperature limit on the thermostat so the flooring stays within the manufacturer's range.
Here is where our scope ends. We install the heating mats or cable, the floor sensor and the flooring above, and we test the system throughout.
A licensed electrical contractor provides the dedicated circuit, the GFCI protection and the final thermostat connection. In Ontario, that work is filed with the Electrical Safety Authority, which issues the permit and inspection.
For hydronic systems, a licensed plumbing or HVAC contractor connects the boiler or water heater. We coordinate the trades so you have one schedule to follow.
Nobody locally publishes this, so here are real numbers. Electric floor heat draws about 12 to 15 watts per square foot while running.
A 50 square foot bathroom running a morning and evening schedule uses roughly 60 to 110 kilowatt hours a month in winter. At Ontario's all-in residential rates, that is about $8 to $20 a month.
That works out to roughly $0.15 to $0.40 per square foot per month in the coldest months, and close to nothing in summer. Setting the thermostat to heat on off-peak hours lowers the cost further.
