A sports floor has to protect athletes, return the ball true and survive years of daily use. Kitchener Prestige Flooring installs maple courts, synthetic sports surfaces and multi-purpose vinyl for schools, churches, community centres and private clubs across Kitchener and Waterloo Region.

Our team has more than 16 years of flooring experience and 1,700+ jobs completed. For athletic floors, that means careful moisture testing, accurate subfloor systems and game lines laid out to the millimetre.

We are licensed, insured and WSIB covered, with the documentation facility managers and school boards require. All sports floor work carries a written 1-year labour warranty.

Sports Surfaces We Install

This page covers courts and play surfaces. Weight rooms and fitness studios are covered on our gym and fitness flooring page.

Maple Hardwood Courts

Northern hard maple is the classic court surface for basketball and volleyball. It is dense, consistent and can be sanded and refinished many times over decades.

We install graded maple strip flooring over a resilient subfloor system designed for athletic use, then sand, seal and paint lines on site.

Synthetic Point-Elastic Surfaces

Poured polyurethane surfaces are seamless and slightly softer at the point of impact. They suit multi-use halls, running areas and facilities that host non-sport events.

They resist moisture better than wood and never need sanding, only periodic recoating.

Multi-Purpose Vinyl Sports Flooring

Sports vinyl, such as Gerflor Taraflex, has a cushioned backing bonded to a tough wear surface. It is common in school gyms, church halls and community centres.

It installs faster than maple, costs less and handles tables and chairs for events without damage.

Shock Absorption and Performance Standards

A sports floor is judged by how it performs, not just how it looks. Two standards set the benchmark.

EN 14904 is the European standard for indoor sports surfaces. ASTM F2772 is the North American standard. Both measure the same core properties.

  • Force reduction: how much impact the floor absorbs compared with concrete.
  • Vertical deformation: how far the floor gives underfoot.
  • Ball rebound: how true a basketball bounces, compared with concrete.
  • Surface friction: enough grip to cut, not so much it catches ankles.

We install systems tested to these standards and follow the maker's specification exactly.

Subfloor Systems Under a Sports Floor

The system under a maple court does most of the athlete-protection work. There are two main approaches.

Sleeper and Channel Systems

Wood sleepers or steel channels sit on rubber pads over the slab, with maple strips fastened across the top. The floor flexes over a wide area when a player lands.

Anchored channel systems hold the floor down against the slab while still allowing movement. They are the standard for school and competition gyms.

Pad and Pour Systems

For synthetic floors, a prefabricated rubber pad is bonded to the slab and sealed. Layers of polyurethane are then poured and levelled on top.

The pad provides shock absorption, and the poured layers create a seamless wear surface.

Game Line Layout and Painting

Lines are where precision shows. We lay out courts to the governing body dimensions for each sport, then mask and paint them by hand.

Multi-sport gyms need line sets that do not confuse players. We use distinct colours for basketball, volleyball, badminton and pickleball, and plan overlaps carefully.

Centre court logos and school crests are stencilled from your artwork. Lines and logos are sealed under the finish coats.

Moisture Testing Before a Court Goes Down

A maple court over a damp slab will cup, and eventually buckle. In older schools and churches, slab moisture is the first thing we check.

We test with in-situ humidity probes and install a polyethylene vapour barrier under every wood system. The building's heating and ventilation must run at normal conditions before and after installation.

Sanding, Recoating and Court Refinishing Cycles

Maple courts need regular care to stay safe and fast.

  1. Annual screen and recoat: a light abrasion of the finish and a fresh coat, usually done in a single day.
  2. Full sand and refinish: every 8 to 10 years, taking the floor back to bare wood with new lines.
  3. Daily maintenance: dust mopping and approved cleaners only.

We set up maintenance schedules for schools and clubs. Residential and small-room refinishing lives on our floor sanding and refinishing page.

Working Around School and Season Calendars

Most facilities have one real installation window: the summer shutdown in July and August. Club and league facilities often have a short gap between seasons.

We plan backwards from those dates. Site visits, moisture testing and material orders happen months ahead so the crew can start the day the building empties.

For multi-surface facility projects, our commercial flooring team coordinates the rest of the building. We also install dance studio flooring for multi-use arts spaces.

How often does a gym floor need refinishing?

Most maple gym floors need a screen and recoat every year and a full sand and refinish every 8 to 10 years, depending on use. Floors used for street shoes and events wear faster than those used only for sport.

Can you repaint game lines without replacing the floor?

Yes. When a floor is fully sanded, we lay out and paint a completely new line set, including new sports like pickleball. On a screen and recoat, existing lines can be touched up or new lines added before the topcoat.

What standards should a school gym floor meet?

Look for a system tested to EN 14904 or ASTM F2772. These standards measure shock absorption, vertical deformation, ball rebound and surface friction. Maple should also carry a recognised grading stamp.

Can you install during the summer shutdown?

Yes, and that is when most school and club floors are done. Summer slots fill early, so we recommend booking the site visit and moisture testing in the winter or early spring.
