A squeak is a symptom, and fixing it properly starts with finding what is actually moving. Kitchener Prestige Flooring repairs squeaky floors and stairs for homeowners and landlords across Kitchener and Waterloo Region, usually without tearing anything up.

There are four common causes, and each has a different fix. Treating the wrong one is why squeaks come back.
As lumber dries and shrinks, small gaps open between the subfloor and the joists. Each step pushes the subfloor down onto the joist and it rubs on the nails.
This is the most common squeak in Waterloo Region homes, especially in the first winter after a new build.
Nails loosen over time as wood moves with the seasons. The subfloor slides up and down the nail shank, producing a squeak or a pop.
Screws and construction adhesive fix this for good.
In hardwood floors, boards can rub against each other at the tongue and groove as they move. The sound is a dry creak rather than a sharp squeak.
It is common in dry winter air and often quiets down in humid months.
Some noises are not the floor at all. Heating ducts and pipes rubbing against joists or hangers creak as they expand and shrink.
We check these before touching the floor. The fix may be a padded strap in the basement, not flooring work.
We work in pairs. One person walks the floor slowly while the other listens and watches from below, if the ceiling is open.
Every squeak is marked with tape above and below. We check which joist it sits over, whether the subfloor moves and whether anything nearby like ductwork is touching.
Only then do we choose a fix. Guessing leads to extra holes and squeaks that come back.
When there is no access from below, we work through the finished floor.
We drill a counterbored hole through the hardwood at the joist, drive a screw to pull the subfloor tight, then glue in a matching wood plug. Once finished, it is almost invisible.
For prefinished floors, we use special trim-head screws with colour-matched filler.
Through carpet, we use a breakaway screw kit. The screw goes through the carpet and pad into the joist, then the head snaps off below the carpet surface.
There is no visible hole and nothing to catch a vacuum.
An unfinished basement ceiling makes squeak repair faster and more permanent.
Where the subfloor has lifted off the joist, we glue thin wood shims into the gap. We never hammer them in, which would lift the floor further.
Where the subfloor sags between joists, we add solid blocking glued and screwed tight up underneath.
When a joist is undersized, cracked or notched, the whole floor bounces. We fasten a new joist alongside the old one to share the load.

Stairs squeak for different reasons than floors. Treads rub against risers, stringers or the nails holding them.
From above, we drive hidden screws through treads into risers and stringers. From below, we add glue blocks in the corners and shims where treads have lifted.

Most squeaks are cosmetic. Some are early warnings.
Watch for these signs alongside the noise: a floor that bounces or sags, cracked tile or grout, doors that stick or swing open, and gaps opening between the floor and baseboard.
These can point to undersized, damaged or notched joists, or to a support beam problem. We will inspect and tell you honestly whether you need a structural repair or an engineer.

From an open basement ceiling, we shim and glue the subfloor to the joists. Only rotted or badly damaged subfloors need the floor removed.
New floors squeak when the subfloor was not re-fastened before installation, when fasteners missed the joists, or when a floating floor sits over a dip. Seasonal drying in the first winter can also loosen fasteners.
Most squeaks are not. They are loose fasteners or small gaps. But squeaks with bouncing, sagging, cracked tile or doors that stick can point to undersized or damaged joists, which we will check.
Yes. Stair squeaks usually come from treads rubbing on risers or stringers. We fix them from above with hidden screws, or from below with glue blocks and shims where the underside is open.
